A winter storm has broken off into two branches, one battering the Northeast, and the other bringing show and ice to the South.

America on ice! Incredible aerial photos show freezing conditions across the northeast as cities dig out from 'bomb cyclone' while braving frigid temperatures

Aerial photos show freezing conditions in East

The ‘bomb cyclone’, otherwise known as winter storm Grayson which dumped up to 18 inches of snow in parts of the Northeast on Thursday, has passed. But the remnants of the nor’easter has provided for stunning aerial photos as Americans from as far north as Maine to as far south as Georgia began to dig out from the storm on Friday. Aerial photos of New York, New Jersey, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Chicago show the extent to which the freezing cold temperatures have turned waterways into ice.

Not so fun time! Winter storm Frankie forces cancellation of New Year's Eve events across the Northeast as it brings snow and bitterly cold conditions with the NYPD issuing a hypothermia warning ahead of the ball drop

Big chill will ring in the New Year across the Northeast

Bitterly cold weather will usher in New Year's Eve celebrations across the Northeast and Midwest United States, bringing record low temperatures and making traveling difficult. The mercury in New York City's Times Square is expected to drop to about 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 12 Celsius),' according to the National Weather Service. The wind chill is estimated at nearly 0 F (minus 18C) during the final hours of 2017, and will test the willpower of hundreds of thousands of New Year's Eve revelers. Next week could bring low temperatures last recorded 130 years ago to parts of Nebraska, said David Eastlack, a meteorologist with the weather service.

North East braces for up to 18-inches of snow and temperatures as low as 15 degrees as freezing Nor-easter looks set to bring blizzard white-out conditions

Storm to hit Northeast; blizzard watch for NYC, Boston

Sunny days and T-shirt temperatures made it appear winter had made an early exit last week. Unfortunately, it's not finished with us yet - at least in the Northeast where a powerful storm with high winds and up to a foot of snow is expected next week. Forecasters at the National Weather Service said Saturday there's a blizzard watch for coastal regions including New York City and Boston from Monday night into Tuesday. There also is a winter storm watch for a larger area that includes much of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, upstate New York and New England.

Blizzard will bury New England under two feet of snow today, ahead of a bitterly cold New Year that could see a record-breaking 48 states below freezing

Blizzard to bury New England under two feet of snow, while all 48 contiguous states may

Despite a mild Christmas in some parts of the US, winter will return with a vengeance this weekend as blizzards approach New England and temperatures are expected to plummet across the contiguous US. Temperatures are likely to drop to record lows in the first week of 2017, leaving at least some of all 48 of the mainland US states at 32 degrees or under. But before then New England will spend Thursday through Friday in the middle of blizzard conditions that will drop as much as two feet of snow on several of its states, USA Today reported. Snow has already fallen heavily in much of the country, including Mandan, Idaho (inset).

Get ready for the big freeze! Western half of US to be hit with temperatures of up to 30 degrees colder than normal after Alaska experiences bone-chilling lows of minus 41F

Western half of US to be hit with temperatures of up to 30 degrees colder than normal

Forecasts expect the record-setting cold weather plaguing Alaska to spread to the rest of the United States in the coming week. Low temperatures have already set in Alaska, which is witnessing its coldest weather in almost two years. Just this week, temperatures in Fairbanks reached minus-31 degrees, ending a 624-day stretch of warmer weather. Now forecasters expect the record-setting weather may spread to 'most' of the country.

Next Polar Plunge Could Be Winter's Coldest...

Energy emergency...

Historic deep freeze sets in: Plunging temperatures close schools in Midwest and cancel more than 500 flights

weather

For three days, actual temperatures will range from the teens to below zero, and the wind chills will be even colder, reaching -43F in Minneapolis, -23F in Milwaukee and Chicago, -14F in Kansas City, Missouri, and -3F in Louisville, Kentucky. The National Weather Service says most of the Midwest will feel far colder than Monday's expected high of -4F in the nation's northernmost city of Barrow, Alaska.

'Once in a generation' ice storm descends on South as brutal cold continues to blanket the Midwest - closing schools, freezing rivers and grounding more than 3,200 flights

composite

A blast of freezing rain will scatter snow and ice across the Deep South today in what has been called a 'once in a generation' ice storm. Winter storm alerts have been issued by the National Weather Service stretching from central Texas through the Gulf Coast into Georgia, the Carolinas and far southeast Virginia. The brutal cold temperatures and wind chills (top right) will also continue to rattle the Midwest throughout Tuesday. Parts of the Midwest will endure a second consecutive day of subzero highs, while much of the Northeast will see highs in the single digits and teens on Tuesday and Wednesday.
