Golden State Killer, 72, looks gaunt as he faces down relatives of his alleged victims in court as he is charged with 26 COUNTS of murder and kidnap

'Golden State Killer', 72, looks gaunt as he faces down relatives of his alleged victims

Joseph DeAngelo, 72, stood ramrod straight in a cage in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday and refused to look around the courtroom, which was packed with his alleged victims and their relatives. DeAngelo was summoned to be charged with 26 counts of murder and kidnapping as prosecutors consolidated charges from around the state into a single case. He will not face charges for more than 50 alleged rapes since the statute of limitations has long since expired. DeAngelo, who was finally traced using DNA more than three decades after the Golden State Killer spree stopped, has yet to enter a plea.

Hope all those monsters who have a cold case on their conscience are living in fear these days. DNA will get you eventually! Great reason for every country to bring back the death penalty. DNA does not lie.

Did an innocent man die in prison for 'murdering' one of the Golden State Killer's victims? Doubts are raised over conviction of man found guilty of strangling and stabbing a girl, 14, in 1975 in the same area

Golden State Killer linked to 1975 murder of teen girl

A man who maintained his innocence after being convicted in the decades-old murder of a 14-year-old girl died in prison five years ago - and the case has recently been linked to that of the Golden State Killer - who was arrested in April on suspicion of at least 12 deaths and 50 rapes in the same vicinity. Oscar Archie Clifton, died in 2013 while serving a life term for the murder of Donna Jo Richmond, who mysteriously vanished from her home in Exeter, California, on December 26, 1975. Clifton was 35 at the time he was arrested for kidnapping after authorities found an invoice book that they believed to belong to the carpenter - based on the name written inside.

Golden State Killer suspect is CLEARED by DNA over 1978 murders of a woman and her son that put an innocent man in prison - but he's still charged with at least 12 other deaths and suspected in 50 rapes

Golden State killer suspect cleared by DNA of 1978 killings

The suspected Golden State Killer has been cleared of any involvement in the 1978 cold case killing of a woman and her young son. DNA from Joseph James DeAngelo (right) has been tested by investigators desperate to close up their cold case murders, to see if the 72-year-old had anything to do with the unsolved crimes. Most recently, it was found he had no involvement in the murders of Rhonda Whicht (bottom left) and her four-year-old son Donald (top left). Rhonda's boyfriend Craig Coley (right inset) was wrongly imprisoned for the crime for 38 years until DNA evidence showed he was likely not responsible and he was pardoned last year.

Terrifying look inside Golden State Killer's bedroom stocked with sick trophies from his victims' homes as investigator describes one VERY chilling detail that made 'the biggest impression'

Investigators release pictures from serial killer Paul Holes' bedroom

Jewelry, cuff links and necklaces with heart-shaped pendants (main) were trinkets found in the Golden State Killer suspect's home believed to belong to his many victims. Also found were ski masks (inset) used in the attacks and a towel draped over his TV to give a 70s glow. Suspect Joseph DeAngelo (right) is believed to be responsible for at least 12 murders and more than 50 rapes in California between 1975 and 1986.

REVEALED: Relatives of Golden State Killer suspect believe his 'rampage of 12 murders and 51 rapes' was sparked by watching his sister being sexually assaulted by two men when she was seven

Relatives of Golden State Killer suspect say he saw his sister being raped

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, (left and middle in court last month and as a high school sophomore, inset right) was '9 or 10' when his seven-year-old sister Constance (right) was attacked on a German air force base. That is according to DeAngelo nephew Jesse Ryland, 35, who believes the incident could have sparked off the spell of 12 murders and 51 rapes he is accused of. The nephew’s comments won some support among experts. Professor Ann Wolbert Burgess, a psychiatric nurse who has examined the early years of serial killers for the FBI, said witnessing the rape could have created a vile fantasy that DeAngelo sought to recreate. A cold case expert, meanwhile, said many serial killers did have traumatic upbringings, but insisted the real reason some children go on to commit evil acts as adults was a ‘mystery’.

I have lived in California for 35 years and never heard of this guy until now. Shocking how such a monster could have eluded publicity for so long.

Is this the woman who broke the Golden State Killer's heart and 'sparked' his murderous rampage? Young lab assistant called Bonnie who was engaged to serial killer and whose name he shouted during rapes

Pictured: Young lab assistant who dumped the 'Golden State Killer' before she was due to

A photograph of the woman who dumped a former California cop before they were supposed to marry which supposedly fueled his alleged spree of murders and rapes decades ago has emerged. Bonnie Jean Colwell (right) was reportedly engaged to Joseph James DeAngelo (left), the 72-year-old resident of a Sacramento suburb who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly being the Golden State Killer. Investigators say he may have been motivated to kill 12 people, rape up to 51 women, and burglarize over 150 homes during the 1970s and 80s due to his hatred of his ex-fiancee.

Serial killer search led to wrong man in 2017

Cops used a genetic profile based on DNA from crime scenes and compared it to 189,000 others uploaded by amateur genealogists on YSearch.org (top right) to track down the care home resident, who also shared a rare genetic marker with the killer. They then convinced a judge to issue an order allowing cops to harvest a DNA sample while he was lying in bed seriously ill. The elderly man's daughter said authorities never notified her before swabbing her father for DNA in his bed, but once they told her afterward she understood and worked with them to eliminate people who conceivably could be the killer. Their search eventually detectives to former cop Joseph DeAngelo who they now say is the man responsible for murdering 13 people and raping nearly 50 women (he is pictured middle, in court; and top left, while in the police). Also pictured: A relative of one of the killer's victims appears in court (bottom left) and an investigator carries away boxes of evidence from DeAngelo's home (bottom right).

'He yelled, "I hate you Bonnie"': Golden State Killer launched his rape and murder spree because 'his fiancee named Bonnie dumped him' and he even ranted about her to his victims, investigator reveals

Golden State Killer may have been motivated by hatred of ex-fiance Bonnie

Joseph DeAngelo, the former cop identified as the Golden State Killer, may have been motivated to rape and murder dozens due to his hatred of his ex-fiance, investigators say. The 72-year-old was arrested at his home in Citrus Heights, California on Tuesday after DNA linked him to crimes attributed to the Golden State Killer from the 1970s and 80s. Paul Holes, an investigator who has been looking into the case for years, said one of the critical clues linking DeAngelo to the crimes was that he yelled out 'I hate you Bonnie' during one of his first alleged rape attacks.

Daughter of Golden State Killer victim speaks out after arrest

Jennifer Carole, who grew up in Ventura but now lives in Santa Cruz, had just graduated high school in March 1980 when her father Lyman Smith and stepmother Charlene were battered to death in their home. It took police 20 years to link their vicious killing to the Golden State Killer, and another 20 years again for officers to arrest the man they believe is responsible, Joseph James DeAngelo. Carole said she is 'in shock' after learning of the arrest, adding that she had always imagined the killer was dead in order to cope. 'I never thought we'd actually get a person,' she said.

Tied up in their own homes, tortured with kitchen dishes, raped and bludgeoned to death: The 12 victims murdered by Golden State Killer 40 years ago as ex-cop is charged

The 12 victims of the Golden State Killer's deadly crime spree

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with four murders in California. Police believe he is linked to the other eight killings as well. A DNA match led to his arrest in one of the most baffling and sadistic crime sprees of the 1970s and 80s. The attacker, dubbed the Golden State Killer, was also behind 45 rapes in the area. The victims ranged in age from 13 to 41. The victims are (left to right, top to bottom) Brian and Katie Maggiore, Cheri Domingo and Gregory Sanchez, Patrice and Keith Harrington, Manuela Witthuhn, Lyman and Charlene Smith, Janelle Lisa Cruz and Dr Robert Offerman and Alexandria Manning.

The most prolific Rapist Serial Killer never caught!

'Golden State Killer' wanted for 12 murders and 45 rapes in the 1970s and 80s may have fled to Australia, and could have links with notorious child sex predator known as 'Mr Cruel'

One of America's most prolific serial killers 'fled to Australia'

One of America's most prolific serial killers wanted for 12 murders and 45 rapes may have fled to Australia, a retired US policeman has claimed. The so-called Golden State Killer terrorised California in the 1970s and 1980s but has never been identified. In 2016 the FBI renewed their bid to find him, offering a $50,000 reward for information and releasing a poster (top right) featuring three mocked-up faces that matched victims' descriptions of the killer. A retired Los Angles detective, David Gates, replied to the appeal, saying one of the faces resembled a suspect he was chasing for burglaries in the mid-1980s. The burglar had fled to Australia where he was killed in a car crash. Left: The scene of one of the killer's crimes. Right: Fingerprints kept as evidence by the FBI. Inset: Two of the killers victims who were murdered in 1978 on a dog walk.
