Millions around the globe enjoy spectacular Blood Moon as crimson lunar eclipse lasts for 104 minutes, making it the longest this century

Longest lunar eclipse in 100 years sees Blood Moon in the sky across UK Europe Asia Africa

Britain has been left underwhelmed by tonight's 'Blood Moon' as torrential rain and cloud meant stargazers across the country (pictured on Primrose Hill in London right) missed out while millions across the globe were spellbound by the once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. The longest lunar eclipse this century sent the moon behind the shadow of the Earth tonight, turning it a deep crimson for people in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, parts of Australasia and South America. Mars was also visible to the naked eye this evening after moving the closest to the Earth it will be over the next 270 years. But Britons grumbled as today's storms sent the scarlet moon behind the clouds and hopeful stargazers were left disappointed. The Blood Moon lasted between 84 and 104 minutes for millions worldwide, but the UK was left disappointed by poor visibility.

Moon will turn a stunning blood red on Friday in total lunar eclipse which will stretch for nearly two hours - the longest this century

Moon will turn a stunning blood red on Friday in longest total lunar eclipse this century

Total lunar eclipses turn the moon red when the Earth passes between the Sun and the moon and casts a shadow on it. When the white light from the Sun hits the Earth's atmosphere, which is full of nitrogen, the blue colours in the white are scattered, meaning only the red colours will hit the moon giving it an eerie tint. The UK falls slightly outside of the ideal viewing range, meaning people will see the total eclipse for only 84 minutes of the total time.
