The Manson family today: From finding God, to winning a college degree and writing a book, the followers of Charles Manson are either behind bars or dead – apart from one

Where the followers of Charles Manson's cult are today

Charles Manson's 'Family' disciples committed at least nine murders, but it was the horrific killing spree of seven people on August 9-10, 1969 that sealed his notoriety - and earned him life in prison. The aim was for African Americans to be blamed, in the hope of sparking what Manson (top left) believed to be an impending and apocalyptic race war. In the years following the murders, several 'Family' members were sentenced to death, but later given life when the California Supreme Court ruled in 1972 that the death penalty was unconstitutional. Manson is the second of the cult to die, following Susan Atkins (second from right in top row), who died in 2009 of brain cancer. The only member to be paroled is Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme (bottom right). Members who remain in prison are Charles 'Tex' Watson (second right in top row), 71; Patricia Krenwinkel (top right), 69; Leslie Van Houten (bottom left), 68; Bruce Davis (second left in bottom row), 75; and Robert Beausoleil (second right in bottom row), 70.

The murders that rocked America: How pregnant Sharon Tate and the Manson Family's victims were the victims of ill-fated circumstance in a bloodbath that remains seared into public consciousness and pop culture

Manson victims were in the wrong house at the wrong time

Five victims of the Manson Family, including actress Sharon Tate (bottom right) were killed in August 1969 at the former Los Angeles home (main) of record producer Terry Melcher, who had snubbed aspiring musician and career criminal Charles Manson (top right). As charismatic as he was dangerous, Manson convinced his followers to commit gruesome murders, hoping to incite a race war that he called 'helter skelter.' He was given the death penalty before California outlawed capital punishment and instead gave him nine life sentences. Manson - who died on Sunday at the age of 83 - became firmly entrenched in popular culture; the brutality of the murders, the celebrity of the victims and the callousness of the young, female followers who committed the killings have made the Manson Family one of the most notorious criminal gangs to this day

The sad tale of Manson and his gang was the horrible death of the beautiful actress Sharon Tate, who may have been a household name if she lived.  Doris Tate, Sharon Tate's mother, helped usher in victims' impact statements in parole hearings. She feared members of the Manson family might obtain parole without the board hearing from those devastated by their crimes. In 1982, following the mother's crusade, California passed the Victims' Bill of Rights.

Even sadder was that of Paul Tate, father of Sharon Tate, who ended up having to clean the blood-soaked crime scene where his daughter had begged for her baby's life.   "He said that the one thing that brought him to his knees literally — in grief — was having to scrub his child's blood off the floor," said Alisa Statman, co-author of "Restless Souls: The Sharon Tate Family's Account of Stardom, the Manson Murders, and a Crusade for Justice."

Manson Family member, 67, who stabbed couple to death in their home is denied parole as judge says she is still a threat to society after 47 years behind bars

FILE - In this April 14, 2016 file photo, former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten confers with her attorney Rich Pfeiffer, not shown, during a break from her hearing before the California Board of Parole Hearings at the California Institution for Women in Chino, Calif. A judge has upheld Gov. Jerry Brown¿s decision to keep Charles Manson follower Van Houten in prison. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William Ryan on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, refused a request from Van Houten¿s lawyer to overturn Brown¿s decision. A state board in April had declared Van Houten, who killed a California couple more than 40 years ago, eligible for parole after years of good prison behavior. (AP Photo/Nick Ut, File)

Leslie Van Houten, who is now 67, had her request for freedom turned down by a Los Angeles judge on Thursday after pleading to be released for good behavior. She has been in prison since 1969.

Here it is...  I had a very good friend, who has since passed away, that was one of the largest drug dealers to the stars in LA, back in the early 1970's....  He skipped bail and lived for almost 20 years on the run (like the fugitive show) and worked painting at a carnival company.   He told me, back in 1985 that he knew Charles Manson very well. They were competitors.  Mike's customers were Jim Morrison, and others, while Manson's big catch were the beach boys!  He told me that it was Beach Boys who pissed Manson off, and that Sharon Tate was murdered because her husband bought the home of one of the Wilson's!  So when the Manson group went to that house to murder, there planned on it being the Wilson Family and NOT Sharon Tate.  This girl was killed (along with the others) by mistake!

Michael Saint (his alias) later got a lawyer in the 90's, turned himself in, and with some help from me and others had all charges dropped!

'One of Charles Manson's murderers gang babysat my two children' says Beach Boys star Mike Love

Beach Boys star Mike Love recalls horror when he realised children were with Susan Atkins

Beach Boys star Mike Love (left) has revealed how a member of the murderous Charles Manson gang babysat his two children. In today's Event magazine, Love recalls his horror when he realised the children had been left with Susan Atkins, later convicted for her role in the notorious Manson murder spree of 1969. In an extract from his autobiography, Love writes: 'Atkins was convicted of participating in eight murders and was sentenced to death. And she was our babysitter!' At the time, Love was separated from his wife and mother of his children, Suzanne, who was involved with his cousin and fellow band member Dennis Wilson. Atkins had landed the job of babysitter after Wilson fell under the spell of Manson in the summer of 1968.
