Photographer captures epic 20-minute life and death battle between a giant octopus and a 264lb seal

Photographer captures epic battle between octopus and seal

Tourists have witnessed the incredible moment an enormous octopus (pictured) has gone one-on-one with a 120kg seal. Conner Stapley caught the unbelievable 20-minute battle royal during a kayaking tour in Kaikoura, in New Zealand's South Island, on Tuesday at 2pm. The 28-year-old was leading a group of three kayakers around Kaikoura's South Bay when they watched the adult fur seal rip the giant octopus apart for food. Conner, who is a guide for Kaikoura Kayaks, said: 'It is quite rare to see something like this and rarer at this time of day, normally you would see New Zealand fur seals feeding in the evenings.'

Shear madness! Alpacas sport bizarre new look for the summer...and now they're real studs!

Cotswold alpacas sport bizarre new look for the summer

A herd of Cotswold alpacas have been given bizarre new haircuts (pictured) for summer, including one styled to look like a poodle and another like a dinosaur. Helen Kendall Smith, 53, cut the coats of ten of her 30-strong flock to celebrate a decade of breeding the animals in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The alpaca are sheared annually to stop their fleeces getting too long and causing them distress, but this year Ms Smith decided to give her flock more unusual styles than they were used to.

Zebra swallowed whole by a crocodile in Kenya

The huge predator devours its prey and its monstrous body swells as it digests its sizeable lunch in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The crocodile has to fight away another beast who tries to get in on its food, but it shares nothing and is pictured floating in the water with the Zebra's head coming from its powerful jaws. Photographer Subramanian Sridharan captured the snaps and said he had to accept nature taking its course.

Don't forget elephants: Stunning images taken by the world's top wildlife photographers in a race to save magnificent species from being poached to extinction

La Galleria Pall Mall showcases stunning photos of African wildlife

The photos are in a new book on the animals featuring work by 65 of the world's top wildlife photographers. The likes of Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting and Michael Poliza have combined for the project in aid of conservation. The images were on display at La Galleria Pall Mall in London earlier this year. Founder Margot Raggett said she decided to start the project after reading a quote by Sir David Attenborough. He had asked: 'Are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?' But Ms Raggett said: 'My response to Sir David's question was an emphatic "No".' Pictured: Elephants (clockwise, from top left) at Amboseli National Park in Kenya, Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa, Victoria Falls in Zambia, Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana and Kwazulu Natal in South Africa.
