THURSDAY, Aug. 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Analyzing the composition of people's collection of gut bacteria -- also called the gut microbiome -- can help improve identification of those who are at risk for, or already have, colon cancer, according to a new study.

Researchers collected stool samples from 30 healthy people, 30 people with precancerous intestinal polyps and 30 people with advanced colon or rectal cancer in order to assess the composition of their gut microbiomes.

Good news, folks who shop at the fancy grocery: That kombucha you're drinking could actually pave the way to a cancer-free life.

Researchers from UCLA say gut bacteria can reduce the risk for some types of cancer — and can even slow or stop cancer development in its tumorous tracks. Their findings were published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE.

Getting that healthy gut bacteria doesn't take a medical procedure. Probiotics, which live in yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, dark chocolate and kombucha, are all you need.

UCLA pathology professor Robert Schiestl zeroed in on the gut bacteria Lactobacillus johnsonii 456, a particularly abundant bacterial strain that aids in anti-inflammatory processes and even helps reduce anxiety.

Lactobacillus reduced damage to genes in lab mice and cut way down on inflammation, the UCLA team found. It's a huge finding, because inflammation is a major symptom in illnesses such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and arthritis. Bolstered levels of healthy gut bacteria could stop those diseases from forming.

"It is not invasive and [is] rather easy to do," Schiestl said in a statement.

What Does Your Gut Have to Do With Eczema? A Lot...

Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a term used to describe a broad selection of skin conditions. It is characterized by dry skin, rashes, itching, swelling, redness, flaking, crusting, blistering, oozing of pus, bleeding, discoloration and repeated eruption of skin sores.

Although there are many types of eczema, the one with a direct link to gut flora and diet is known as atopic eczema.

Atopic eczema is a chronic skin condition and an allergic disease with genetic components. It is also hereditary and known to occur along with other allergic diseases such as asthma, hay fever and food allergy.

It is important for people with eczema and their loved ones to understand how to take care of their skin because using the wrong soap or moisturizer can cause flare-ups that are itchy or painful. On the other hand, using the correct soap or moisturizer can calm down inflamed skin or prevent flare-ups.

Eczema - "Leaky Skin"

In general people who have eczema have "leaky skin," meaning the barrier function of their skin does not work well. Practically this means:

The unlikely new medicine... pickled cabbage:

Sauerkraut, blue cheese and pickles hardly sound like the route to wellbeing. But fermented foods - left to age for anything from a few days to weeks before they're eaten - are the new health craze.

It comes from the U.S. of course, where it's become fashionable to ferment vegetables and drink kombucha - a fizzy, fermented tea drunk for centuries in China.

Now the science appears to back it up. Last week Cambridge University researchers reported that regular consumption of fermented low-fat dairy foods, such as yoghurt, fromage frais and cottage cheese, could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 25 per cent over 11 years.

Fermented foods could stimulate bacteria that help with immunity, helping cold sufferers

When certain foods are left to ferment, they are 'pre-digested' by good bacteria and yeast found naturally on the surface of the food. These microbes eat the food before you do, breaking down the sugars and starches and making the nutrients easier for the body to absorb.

I eat cabbage 3 times a day! Sauerkraut is the best pro-biotic you can use, but it must be raw - and not cooked (as almost all store brands!).. 0% of your immune system is in your gut...so take care of it!!
