There are some around the NFL wondering if the NFC Championship problem was not the officials’ eyes, brain or judgment, but their past or present addresses.

In actual NFL whispers that sound closer to inane commentary from the bleachers, ESPN reported Sunday there is concern around the league that four officials with Southern California ties worked the Saints-Rams game that ended in controversy and New Orleans fury.

The piece cautions that the NFL does not actually believe the game was fixed and that these Angelenos skillfully directed a close game into overtime and ensured a Rams victory. However, there are some around the league concerned with the peripherals of the refs’ backgrounds, especially because those most responsible for blowing the Nickell Robey-Coleman-vs.-Tommylee Lewis pass-interference call near the end of regulation are from or live in California.

Lead official Bill Vinovich is from Newport Beach. According to ESPN, down judge Patrick Turner — who was supposed to follow Lewis on the play — is from Lakewood. The report states side judge Gary Cavaletto, whose eyes were on Lewis as Drew Brees passed to him, lives in Santa Barbara. And back judge Todd Prukop, essentially the safety on the play, lives in Mission Viejo.

“The NFL put [itself] in a bad situation,” one officiating source told ESPN. “This is stuff that has to be taken care of prior to game. It’s just guys not thinking of what’s going on, nobody doing their checks and balances. The league is usually pretty much on top of it. This is one that slipped through the cracks.”

The Saints declined comment to ESPN, but their fans have not denied any comment to anyone ever. There is a lawsuit from a New Orleans attorney demanding commissioner Roger Goodell overturn the result, which brought the Rams into the Super Bowl and left the Saints crushed.

“Officiating assignments are based on performance and not geographic location,” a league spokesman told ESPN.

The report points out that there have been referee assignments and reassignments in the past to avoid any sniff of bias. Ed Hochuli, who is from Phoenix, would not officiate Cardinals home games, and Mike Carey, who lives in San Diego, would not do Chargers home games.

The NFL season is nearly coming to its end, with only six more weeks of regular season play left. Which has caused many fans on social media to wonder about all the empty seats in stadiums everywhere.

Several fans were sad to note the empty seats as the Baltimore Ravens squeaked by the Cincinnati Bengals 24-21 at the Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium:

He needs to get a real job working in a coal mine or fast food restaurant. His days of grandstanding in the public eye are thankfully over.

Poll: 16% of NFL fans say they won't watch the Super Bowl

Super Bowl 52 is just a few days away, and after NFL regular season TV ratings fell by nearly 10% this season on average, one of the biggest questions pundits and sports media have is: Will the Super Bowl ratings be good?

If the results of a new survey from Seton Hall University are to be believed, the answer might be no.

Seton Hall surveyed 706 Americans across the country, via landlines and cellphones, from Jan. 29 to Jan. 31. The first question asked people how closely they follow the NFL. Of those who said they follow it “very closely,” a group the survey identifies as NFL fans, 16% said they won’t watch this year’s Super Bowl. The poll has a 3.8% margin of error.      https://finance.yahoo.com/news/poll-16-nfl-fans-say-wont-watch-super-bowl-204026174.html

TV Ratings: More Fatigue for 'Sunday Night Football'

The Steelers' narrow win drops year-to-year and week-to-week.

Sunday's super-slim 39-38 victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Baltimore Ravens was the biggest thing going for broadcast on Sunday night.

NBC's latest Sunday Night Football averaged an 11.6 overnight rating among households. Before time zone adjustments, it easily won the night — topping even the midwinter finale of AMC's The Walking Dead. But, stacked against a season high for the same week a year ago, the game suffered a pretty steep drop.

The Steelers' win was down 30 percent from the huge Giants-Cowboys game a year ago. And, even with such a tight matchup, this week's marquee primetime game was down 11 percent.

Good news for Fox: its own NFL overrun, from the day's biggest game, propelled huge gains for its primetime lineup. Before any adjustments, The Simpsons averaged a 2.7 rating among adults 18-49 in Fast Affiliate returns. Bob's Burgers (1.6 adults) was also improved, while Family Guy held steady with a 1.2 rating in the key demo.

ABC aired a special Frozen short, which pulled in a 1.2 rating in the key demo. On CBS, Wisdom of the Crowddropped to a 0.7 rating in the key demo after a steady 60 MinutesNCIS: Los Angeles (0.8 adults) and Madam Secretary (0.7 adults) rounded out the evening.

ALL 4 NFL PLAYOFF GAMES HAVE POOR RATINGS

1. The NFL had a disastrous weekend when it came to ratings. Numbers have been down all season and it was more of the same for the wild-card games. The biggest surprise was that the best game (Panthers-Falcons) had the biggest decrease year over year. Yes, markets were a big factor, but that was a competitive and entertaining game. Here's the breakdown:

Titans-Chiefs (14.7) was down 11 percent versus last year's Raiders-Texans game.

Falcons-Rams (14.9) was down 10 percent versus last year's Lions-Seahawks game.

Bills-Jaguars (17.2) was down 10 percent versus last year's Dolphins-Steelers game.

Panthers-Saints (20.4) was down 21 percent versus last year's Giants-Packers game.

New England Patriots 'on verge of imploding' because of 'escalating feud' between Tom Brady, coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft over QB's 'snake oil salesman' training guru

New England Patriots 'on verge of imploding' over feud

The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are fracturing at the highest level, according to a report that depicts a growing rift between quarterback Tom Brady (lower left), coach Bill Belichick (upper right) and owner Robert Kraft (lower right). The 13-3 Patriots have been struggling with the role of Brady’s personal trainer and business partner, Alex Guerrero (with Brady, left), who Belichick recently barred from the team’s sideline and plane. Also, the Patriots were forced to trade soon-to-be free agent Jimmy Garoppolo –believed by many to be the heir apparent at quarterback in New England – to the San Francisco 49ers as the 40-year old Brady has given no indication he plans on retiring. The Patriots have a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs and will host a divisional-round game on Saturday, January 13.

NFL THANKSGIVING PRIMETIME RATINGS CRASH BY 10%

Black Friday will have different meanings to different people this year, for 99.9 percent of American businesses it will be a day when profits soar and businesses finish the year strong.

For the NFL, it will be the day they received yet another reminder that they’re doing the opposite of those things.

In what has become a consistent pattern for the league this year, the NFL put a bad product on the field, insulted the country with another protest by a privileged millionaire, and got a bad television rating. Thanksgiving’s primetime clash between the Redskins and the Giants registered a 9.7 in metered markets, down 10 percent from last year.

Roger Goodell's wife ran a secret Twitter account to fire back at critics of the NFL commissioner and blast coverage of anthem controversy

Roger Goodell's wife argued under fake Twitter account

Jane Skinner Goodell on Thursday admitted to running the now-deleted Twitter account @forargument under the name 'Jones smith', using it to clap back at unflattering NFL coverage. 'It was a REALLY silly thing to do and done out of frustration-and love,' Mrs Goodell said in a statement. Screenshots and conversation threads from the deleted account show that Mrs Goodell was primarily interested in nitpicking press coverage of her husband, including the controversy over players kneeling during the national anthem.
