Not laughing now: Hyena is ripped to pieces by a lion

Extraordinary photos taken in South Africa shows a lion capturing a 144lb hyena before ripping it apart. Photographer Chad Cocking, 36, from Johannesburg, spotted the incredible scene in Tanda Tula Safari Camp in Greater Kruger Park. Only 80 yards away, a lion demonstrated to the unlucky hyena who sits higher on the food chain. The 418lb lion grabbed the hyena by the neck before dragging it around, spilling the animals blood.

Thousands of 'penis-fish' wash ashore on California beach after storm pulls 10-inch creatures from their underwater burrows

Thousands of 'penis-fish' washed ashore on California beach

Thousands of 'penis-fish' were found on a California beach after a strong storm ripped through the area and pulled them from their underwater homes - leaving them exposed to predators. Formally known as fat innkeeper worm, this 10-inch marine creature looks like a 'pink sausage' and creates U-shaped burrows in mud or sand that it leaves behind for other creatures to move in - hence its name 'innkeeper'.

The batch includes a sea pike that appears to be smiling, a shrimp that looks like part of a tree and a wolffish which had just devoured a crustacean. The aquatic curiosities were mainly found in the Norwegian and Barents seas in the north of Russia, although some came from the Atlantic Ocean.

Giant African toad disguises itself as the venomous Gaboon viper

A Congolese giant toad (left and inset) has been found to mimic the appearance and behaviour of one of Africa's largest vipers to avoid being eaten. The toad (Sclerophrys channingi), which is the size of a triple cheese burger, is able to make itself look and hiss like the highly venomous Gaboon viper (right) to escape predators.

Disgusting moment that a giant spider catches a BAT in its web and moves in for the kill in skin-crawling images from Texas farm

Disgusting moment a giant spider catches a BAT in its web in skin-crawling images from

Annette Alaniz Guajardo of Poteet, Texas, was leaving home for work when she noticed the arachnid had caught a meal a little bigger than usual and decided to take some photos. Tangled in the lengthy web was a bat that appeared to be nearly double the banana spider's size. While the spiders are venomous, to humans their bites will only cause a slight redness and pain that is less severe than a bee sting.
