Giant African toad disguises itself as the head of a venomous Gaboon viper and HISSES to avoid being eaten by predators

Giant African toad disguises itself as the venomous Gaboon viper

A Congolese giant toad (left and inset) has been found to mimic the appearance and behaviour of one of Africa's largest vipers to avoid being eaten. The toad (Sclerophrys channingi), which is the size of a triple cheese burger, is able to make itself look and hiss like the highly venomous Gaboon viper (right) to escape predators.

Monterey photographer takes incredible snap of great white shark inches from his camera

Scott Davis, from Monterey, California, was leading a photography trip in South Africa when he snapped the jaw-dropping shots. Mr Davis is a former marine biologist turned photojournalist, and previously studied the deep sea predator off the western coast of the US. He said: 'The great white shark poked its head out of the water for a closer look at what was going on and was a mere inches away from my camera - his teeth were very impressive.'

Disgusting moment that a giant spider catches a BAT in its web and moves in for the kill in skin-crawling images from Texas farm

Disgusting moment a giant spider catches a BAT in its web in skin-crawling images from

Annette Alaniz Guajardo of Poteet, Texas, was leaving home for work when she noticed the arachnid had caught a meal a little bigger than usual and decided to take some photos. Tangled in the lengthy web was a bat that appeared to be nearly double the banana spider's size. While the spiders are venomous, to humans their bites will only cause a slight redness and pain that is less severe than a bee sting.

Horror moment a pod of six killer orcas slaughter and eat a rare 60ft blue whale off the coast of Australia

[11837054-0-image-a-64_1554339703581]

This is the incredible moment a pod of killer whales slaughtered and ate a blue whale off the coast of Australia. Six orcas, notorious for preying on mammals including seals, dolphins and other whales, attacked and drowned the 60ft (18metre) beast 12 miles (20km) south of Western Australia. Dramatic pictures showed blood and flesh gushing into the water as the orcas made their kill before 50 others joined to feast on the enormous carcass.

The combined length of the snakes caught so far is more than two miles, while they have collectively weighed more than 11 tons.

Penniston alone is credited with eliminating 235 snakes, the second-most in the program, while Miami resident Brian Hargrove comes in at first place with 257 snakes caught, the agency said.

The lion who lost his pride: Frail old lion is pictured as he starves to death after being cast out by his family in South Africa

Old lion is pictured starving to death in South Africa

The lion, known as Skybed Scar, was well known in Kruger National Park, South Africa, but was kicked out of his pride and grew emaciated before finally succumbing to hunger. Heart-breaking images show his sad decline with his ribs clearly visible in his once powerful body. He is pictured inset lying dead in the grass. At one point, the weak animal, in his final days, was chased by an elephant.
