Airliner carrying 150 passengers skids off a runway into the street in Iran after hard landing damages the landing gear

Airliner carrying 150 passengers skids off a runway into the street in Iran

A Caspian Airlines flight from the Iranian capital of Tehran lost its wheels while landing in the city of Mahshahr around 9.30am local time, before skidding off the runway and into a nearby road. There were 150 passengers on board at the time of the crash, though none of them were seriously injured in the accident. Images from the scene show the plane came to rest across a four-lane highway and narrowly avoided hitting nearby residential buildings. Iranian state TV said the landing gear broke after a hard touch-down, but authorities have not give an official explanation - saying only that an investigation is ongoing.

And there are plenty more amazing images that caught the judges eyes, as we reveal here. Entries were judged on originality, composition and technical proficiency alongside the story behind the submission and its historical impact. The judging panel of experts included broadcaster and historian Dan Snow. The overall winner was an 'outstanding image' of the ruins of the Arromanches' Mulberry Harbour in Normandy, shot by Stéphane Hurel. The famous squadron returned to Sacramento for just the second time since 2008. The pilots of the F/A-18 Hornets dazzled the audience, flying just 18 inches apart at some moments during their formation.

Australian fighter jet and cargo plane weave their way between skyscrapers in incredible display of skill for Brisbane festival

Australian warplanes weave their way between Brisbane skyscrapers

A C-17A Globemaster cargo plane (pictured left and inset) and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet (right) flew low over the Brisbane skyline to mark the Queensland city's annual Riverfire event. Many Brisbane residents stepped out onto their balconies to see the Australian Defence Force planes fly past under the setting sun. Both the planes, which also flew over Brisbane for rehearsals two days earlier, are manufactured by Boeing and operated by Australian Air Force squadrons which are based in Queensland. However, the stunt has previously drawn criticism from residents who said it reminded them of the September 11 attacks and warned that even a 'small mistake' could prove catastrophic.
