Dairy cows have died by the hundreds — even the thousands — before in blizzards. An estimated 35,000 cows died in December 2015 when a winter storm dubbed Goliath swept through West Texas and New Mexico. Tens of thousands more died in an October 2013 snowstorm in South Dakota.

The Pennsylvania groundhog known as America’s most famous weather forecaster — Punxsutawney Phil — did not see his shadow Saturday morning, forecasting an early spring.

Punxsutawney Phil and his top hat-wearing comrades revealed their weather predictions to the public Saturday morning at sunrise, although the group decides on Phil’s forecast ahead of time on a tiny hill called Gobbler’s Knob, located in western Pennsylvania 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Phil made his 133rd recorded appearance on Saturday. It is only the 19th time out of the 123 recorded appearances that Phil has seen his shadow, the York Daily Record reported.

Return of the polar vortex: Icy blast will bring the 'coldest air in five years' with temperatures as low as MINUS 45F over the weekend - and forecasters warn the worst is yet to come

Icy blast brings 'the coldest air in five years' causing temperatures to plummet to MINUS

Forecasters say the bad weather is a replay of the 'polar vortex' that hit in 2014. The polar vortex split above the Arctic Circle, with one part now heading to northern Michigan. Some forecasters have dubbed the weather system 'Barney' because computer forecast models show the cold air as chubby purple blobs. They warn wind chills will send temperatures plunging to -45F in Chicago and say it will be 'the coldest air in five years' by midweek. The arctic blast spread painful cold across the Midwest Friday, closing schools. The polar vortex rarely plunges as far south as the US and last big plunge was in 2014.

New storm brings rare risk of blizzard to Northern California with FIVE FEET of snow expected in the Sierra Nevada

New storm brings risk of blizzard to Northern California

'A major winter storm will hammer much of California through early Thursday,' the National Weather Service said in a flash bulletin on Wednesday morning. 'Blizzard conditions are expected for the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.' An evacuation warning was in place into Thursday morning for Pulga, a canyon community in Butte County neighboring Paradise, which was virtually incinerated two months ago by the Camp Fire that killed 86 people and destroyed nearly 15,000 homes. The NWS issued a flood watch for the county beginning late Wednesday afternoon.

Polar vortex splits into three and sends Arctic air southward as eastern half of the US gears up for bitterly cold weeks to come

[8581558-0-image-a-25_1547606533458]

Arctic air will push southward as far as Tennessee. The low temperature expected for Nashville on Sunday is 17 degrees. So far this winter, most of the eastern half of the U.S. has enjoyed mild weather. The first half of January ranked among the top 10 warmest on record in Minneapolis and Milwaukee, according to the Post. But the split of the polar vortex will unleash bitterly cold air temperatures as well as stormy weather in the days and weeks to come. The satellite image on the left shows the polar vortex splitting above the Arctic. The image on the right shows frigid temperatures expected for this weekend in the eastern U.S.

Storm reports: Deadly winter storm spreads snow, ice into mid-Atlantic

While snow tapers off across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana on Sunday, residents of the mid-Atlantic will face power outages, slick roads and travel delays as snow and ice continue to pile up on Sunday.

"For many areas, this will be a long-duration winter storm event that lasts more than 12 hours and perhaps as long as 48 hours in some cases," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.
